Dry Eye Treatment

Dry eye syndrome is caused by a chronic lack of sufficient lubrication and moisture on the surface of the eye. Consequences of dry eyes range from subtle but constant eye irritation to significant inflammation with frequent blurred vision and even scarring of the front surface of the eye.

There are several factors contributing to dry eye, including environmental and autoimmune disease. The latest research has revealed that eighty-six percent of patients diagnosed with dry eye have an unstable tear film due to compromised meibomian gland function. MGD is a chronic and progressive condition. The outermost layer of the tear film, the lipid layer, is composed of oils from meibomian gland secretions that lubricate, prevent evaporation, and perform barrier functions. If glands become obstructed, changes in glandular secretion may lead to symptoms of eye irritation, inflammation, and ocular surface disease. In many cases, MGD can be improved with regular home warm compresses.

We provide several treatment strategies, ranging from avoiding conditions that can contribute to dry eye and over the counter products to presciption eye drops and treatment of MGD. We are exited to be a provider if the innovative Johnson & Johnson LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System. LipiFlow® uses a single-use sterile device applied to the surface of the eye which is monitored by a computer. It gently heats the meibomian glands on the inner side if the eyelids and applies gentle pressure to express out the inflammatory material in the glands, restoring more normal function.
